The flight from Phoenix to Tampa takes just about forever. You can read to pass the hours. Or catch up on correspondence. Sleep, if you’re lucky. On a recent transcontinental hop, Clare Controls CEO Brett Price used the time to dissect his iPad.
Philosophically, of course. (Note: In the old days, he might actually have disassembled the tablet onboard. Now, it’s practically impossible to get the tiny tools past the TSA.
He asked himself: What makes this thing so good? And how can I inject that into ClareHome?
A big part of the first question has already been answered. Apple received every cent’s worth of the millions they invested in interface research. Their products are among the most universally usable instruments of all time. Proof? Every day millions of regular people – many of them admittedly (and some adamantly) non-technical – love to use their iPhones, iPods and iPads. And that’s exactly why the Clare Controls interface runs on Apple products.
The remainder of the product’s “good-ness,” he realized, lies in its unlimited capacity for personalization. Every user configures and reconfigures the device at will, into whatever they want it to be. And they arrange it all however they want it arranged. Take ten random people and line their iPhones up side by side and you’ll see, essentially, ten unique personal products, running on a common platform. That, Brett concluded, is exactly how home controls should work. In that moment, the Clare Controls App was born.
Until now, home automation interfaces were built using a room-based metaphor. You’d navigate to a room, and perform an action. While common, this simply didn’t reflect the way normal people think. Putting “People Over Places,” the new Clare Controls App invites you to personalize your interface based on your favorite things to do…not the room you’re in. Using familiar Apple gestures, you populate a personal dashboard, called a Control Space, with system and/or location controls that you select and arrange at will.
Change your mind? No problem. You can update your Control Space in about the time it took to read this sentence.
Fact: No one makes home automation as simple as Clare Controls. You’re in complete control, free to create a personal interface that does whatever you want it to, from wherever you are. It’s surprisingly easy, completely personal and unexpectedly fun.
